Ron Artest signs with the Lakers

This is a pretty big deal for the Lakers as they now have the former defensive player of the year on their roster. Kobe and Artest aren't the best of friends, but something tells me they'll get along just fine on an already powerhouse of a team. Looks like we may see the Lakers in the finals next year, yet again.

Serena defeats Venus

Mixed feelings as always when these two play, as Serena Williams beats her older sister in an Independence day showdown. The match was closely fought in the first set with Serena edging Venus in a tiebreak. The second set wasn't so close though as Serena dominated her sister 6 games to 2. This broke the head-to-head tie between the two with Serena winning her 11th major championship to Venus' 10. This is Serena's 3rd Wimbledon championship.

Chesnut defeats Kobayashi

Happy 4th of July guys. An UP for the Americans today as Joey Chestnut beats Takeru Kobayashi in the Coney Island Annual Hot-dog Eating Contest. Chestnut won with a world record 68 franks and buns. This is Chestnuts third consecutive win in this event. Go USA!

Beached porpoise rescue

I love animals so a story like this one brings a big smile to my face. In Canada, a young porpoise was seen in shallow waters struggling to make it back to sea by a passerby. Local fireman were able to save the young animal and bring him to deeper waters. Great job guys .

Jobless rate highest its been in 26 years

The U.S. Job report was released today and the news is bad. 467,00 jobs were cut last June making the jobless rate higher than it's been in 26 years. The full details are in the video below.Somethings got to give at some point.

U.S. makes major move in Afghanistan, 1 U.S. soldier captured

Good and bad news today as the U.S. launches a major offensive push to move the the Taliban out of a particularly dangerous region in Afghanistan. This time around, the 4000 marines accompanied by 600 Afghan troops plan on setting up shop in the the overtaken province until the the area is safe enough for the Afghan troops to protect it. Sadly, on the heels of this good news the bad news is that a U.S. soldier was recently captured by the Taliban. No reports has to how the Taliban will use this troop as leverage; further investigation is ongoing.

Baby strangled by pet python

Sad story today as a 2-year old girl was strangled by the family python in their Florida home. The boyfriend of the baby's mother found the snake coiled around the girl and stabbed it with the knife but the damage had already been done. This particular python was of the Burmese species and has been known to reach 15 ft in length and up to 150 pounds.
